Each year, OFS Legacy crews build or renovate homes in Madison and other Dane County communities. These homes are sold on the open market to income-eligible home buyers. OFS homes are carefully built or remodeled to be energy-efficient, free of hazards like lead paint or asbestos, and easy to maintain. Both newly-built and remodeled homes follow standards of sustainable construction and are certified by Green Built Homes, a certification process sponsored by the Wisconsin Environmental Initiative.
Standard Features of Newly Constructed OFS Homes

Operation Fresh Start homes that are new construction are typically “Focus on Energy Certified.”  This ensures that they are well insulated, airtight, and have energy efficient furnaces, hot water heaters, and ventilation fans.  They also have the “Energy Star Advanced Lighting Package” meaning that at least 60% of the light fixtures are “Focus on Energy Certified” (Our homes are typically 100% Energy Star lighting).  All of these features result in significant savings in the heating, lighting, and general operation of our homes.

 We build as many of these specifications into our renovated homes as we can:

  • Walls are extra-insulated (a minimum 20% above building code requirements)
  • Ceilings are insulated to R-50 (building code in R-38)
  • House wrap used for drainage plane – to keep out moisture
  • Vinyl siding
  • 30 year rated asphalt shingles
  • Vinyl clad windows that are double paned low-E/Argon
  • 200 amp electrical service
  • Garage wired for automatic door opener
  • Active Radon mitigation system/Sub-slab ventilation system
  • High efficiency furnace (AFUE) rating of at least 95%
  • High efficiency 40 gal. water heater (at least 67% efficient)
  • Water softener
  • Garbage Disposal
  • 2 foot wide kitchen cabinet near sink for easy installation of under-counter dishwasher
  • Cable wiring in living room and each bedroom
  • Telephone outlets in each bedroom, living room, and kitchen
  • High efficient-High volume ventilation fan in bathroom
  • Bathroom fan timer to fine-tune ventilation/humidity in bathroom
  • Adjustable dehumidistat – works with the bathroom fan to function as a whole house ventilation system
  • Programmable thermostat
  • Mid-grade Berber carpeting
  • Vinyl flooring or ceramic tile in bathroom
  • Laminate wood flooring in kitchen, dining room, and living room
  • Painted pine or veneered wood trim throughout
  • Hardwood sill in windows
